Small spice jars with shaker lids generally have 2 sizes of apertures within the lid. Some might only have one size of holes so check before you buy. Those with 2 sized apertures have the benefit of being able to be used for a wide variety of different-sized condiments. For example, you can use the side with smaller holes to sprinkle out seasonings such as fine-grained condiments like salt. pepper and paprika. If the container holds the bigger whole types of condiments such as cardamon, cumin and star anise, then you are able to flick up the side with a bigger opening.
These types of lids are most often made from food-grade plastic but there are some that are made in stainless steel. Some designs are flip top and others come with the ability to select the size of the holes by swivelling the lid around. The base of the canisters can be made from plastic, glass or stainless steel with a glass insert.
